What items are necessary for cooking and where can I purchase a discount cooking starter set online?
I’m a student and i would like to start cooking for myself. I just need basic kitchen utensils (pots/pans etc. not necessary) and perhaps some food storage containers. Do you know of any sets that would fit my description? Perhaps a list of what I should be looking for would suffice so suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!
Target has them online and instore. Ikea has some nice sets with plates, utensils, pots and pans too and storage containers to pick and choose from depending on your need, but they don’t ship.
Overstock.com has a nice one that include utensils, food containers and some pots and pans.
For knives, I would strongly suggest you get your knives separately because typically the knives that come in these inexpensive sets are crap. All you really need is a good bread knife, chef’s knife and a paring knife.
For utensils you’ll need a large spoon, a spatula (get one with a good sized head to use for burgers and fish), perhaps tongs to toss and serve salads, turn meats when cooking and toss and serve long pasta. A vegetable peeler, measuring cups and measuring spoons if you plan on using cookbooks and don’t want to eyeball it.
You’ll need a colander for draining pasta and a cutting board.
You’ll probably be better off just buying exactly what you need instead of a set. Those sets always have stuff in them that you don’t want or need. If you’re on a budget, go to a restaurant supply. Their prices are often better than Target or IKEA and things made for the restaurant industry are meant to take a beating. My favourite online restaurant supply is AceMart. Their prices are great, there are no purchase minimums and they should have everything you need.
One small sauce pot
One small pan
Collainder for draining noodles
measuring cup
measuring spoons
wire wisk
plastic stirring spoon
plastic spatula
